Yes, you can take the Canadian citizenship test online. It is the usual way. IRCC emails you an invitation, and you have 30 days to take the test at home with your webcam on.

This is general information to help you prepare. Your own case is decided by IRCC.
How does the online test work?
First you apply. A few weeks or months later, IRCC sends an email invitation with a link to the test. The 20 questions are multiple choice or true or false. You have 45 minutes, and you need 15 right. A webcam watches you while you take it. You can take it from any place, including outside Canada. Read the full test rules if you want the whole picture.
How long do you have?
You have 30 days from the invitation. In that time you can try up to 3 times if you do not pass. Once the 45-minute timer starts, it does not stop, even if your connection drops. If that happens, sign in again as soon as you can with your most recent test link.
What do you need?
- A desktop, laptop or tablet with a working webcam
- The Chrome or Safari browser
- A reliable internet connection
- Good light, so the camera sees your whole face
- Photo ID, such as a permanent resident card, even if it has expired, or a valid driver's licence or health card
Do not use a phone. Do not use a VPN. Close all other tabs, windows and programs before you start.
Where should you sit?
Take the test in the same place where you took your ID photo and your selfie. You may use a library or a public computer. Remove things with personal information from the wall behind you, such as diplomas. Your face must be fully in the frame. Head coverings, religious clothing and glasses are fine.
What is not allowed?
- Other devices, including your phone
- Study notes or books
- Help from another person
- The browser back button
- A VPN
- Other tabs, windows or programs
You must take the test alone. If there are signs of cheating or a technical problem, your test may not count, and you may have to take it again.
How long until you get the result?
An officer reviews an online test before you see a result. That takes a few days or a few weeks. Then you may be invited to a ceremony, or to an interview, or told to take the test again. See what happens if you fail and what happens after the test.
What if you cannot take it online?
Some people take the test in another way, such as on paper, by voice or on a video call. Ask after you get the invitation. IRCC may also ask some people to come in person.
How to practise for an online test
Practise the way you will sit it. Use a laptop or tablet, a quiet room, a 45-minute timer and no notes. Our free practice test has 20 questions and a timer. If you want more, see the prices.
