The fees in a table
| Who | Fee |
|---|---|
| Adult, 18 and over | C$653 |
| Minor, under 18 | C$100 |
| Right of citizenship fee (part of the adult fee) | C$123 |
| Stateless adult born to a Canadian parent | C$123 |
All amounts are in Canadian dollars.
What is in the adult fee
The C$653 covers two parts. One is the processing fee. The other is the right of citizenship fee, which is C$123. You pay both together when you apply.
The minor fee of C$100 covers processing only.
Is the test extra?
The fee list shows no separate price for the citizenship test. You pay the application fee, and the test comes later when you are invited. If you do not pass on your first try, the test process allows up to 3 tries. Read more in how the test works.
When you pay
You pay when you are ready to submit. Do not pay early. Online, you pay and upload the receipt to your account. If you apply on paper, you put the receipt in with your application.
If you pay too little, IRCC returns your application. It is processed only after you pay in full and send it again with the receipt. If you pay too much, the extra comes back to you automatically.
You can see the current fee list here when you are ready to pay: IRCC fee list.
If you withdraw or are refused
If you withdraw before processing starts, you get all your money back. After processing starts, an adult may get the C$123 right of citizenship fee back if the application is not approved or is closed. The processing fee is not refunded.
Other costs you may meet
The fee list covers the application. You may have other costs, and they depend on you:
- A language test. Some people use a test result to show their English or French skills. The test provider sets the price. Others use a diploma or transcript they already have. See the language requirement guide.
- Certified translations. A document in another language needs a certified English or French translation.
- Tracked mail or courier. Only if you apply on paper.
- Practice for the test. This is your choice. You can try our free 20-question practice test first.
Do the fees change?
Yes, they can. The right of citizenship fee changes from time to time, so check the fee list on the day you pay.
Before you pay
- Check that you meet the requirements.
