Last updated October 31, 2026

This is general information to help you prepare. Your own case is decided by IRCC.
The current published time
IRCC updates its estimate once a month. On 9 October 2026 it said:
- Time for a citizenship grant: about 12 months.
- People waiting: about 322,700.
The estimate looks forward: it is how long IRCC expects a new application to take, based on the queue in front of it. IRCC also aims to decide 80 percent or more of applications within 12 months. That is a goal, not a promise.
How many people are ahead of you
IRCC also says how many applications are ahead of you, by the month you applied. The longer you have waited, the shorter the line in front of you.
| You applied in | People ahead of you |
|---|---|
| October 2026 | About 322,700 |
| September 2026 | About 322,600 |
| August 2026 | About 301,300 |
| July 2026 | About 207,100 |
| June 2026 | About 180,900 |
| May 2026 | About 153,300 |
| April 2026 | About 126,600 |
| March 2026 | About 99,300 |
| February 2026 | About 81,700 |
| January 2026 | About 71,500 |
| December 2025 | About 64,800 |
| November 2025 | About 59,200 |
The steps, in order
1. Apply. You send your application and pay the fee. See how to apply and the fees. Check your papers twice. A missing paper can stop the clock.
2. Acknowledgement. IRCC confirms it has your application. This is quick compared with the rest. Keep the number, because you need it to check your case.
3. Test invitation. If you must take the test, IRCC emails an invitation. It comes a few weeks or months after you apply. This is often the longest quiet stretch, and you cannot speed it up. Use it to study. See Discover Canada.
4. The test. You have 30 days from the invitation to take it. Online with a webcam is the usual way. See how the test works. After an online test, an officer reviews it, which takes a few days or a few weeks.
5. Interview, if any. After a pass, an officer may ask you to an interview to check your identity and your papers. Not everyone gets one. If you fail the test three times, you go to a hearing instead.
6. Ceremony. IRCC sends an invitation to a citizenship ceremony, where you take the oath. You become a citizen when the ceremony ends. No timing is given for this step. See the ceremony guide and the oath.
What each step means for you
The biggest waits are before the test invitation and between the test and the ceremony. You control only one step well, the 30 days after the invitation. If you are not ready, a hurried test can cost you a retake and weeks. If you are ready, it goes quickly.
Why your wait may differ
Applications are not all handled in the same order or at the same speed. Papers, background checks and the number of cases in the queue all play a part. Do not compare yourself to a friend. Look at your own online account.
